Law Soc World Cup: Paris September 2007

Our traditional link up with the French Law Soc was taken to a new level this year when our counterparts from across the channel took it upon themselves to organise a Law Society World Cup. With teams from the 6 nations taking part it promised to be an impressive and enjoyable occasion and no one was disappointed.

From the teams opening reception in the impressive surroundings of Paris' Hotel de Ville, to the grounds of Cite University and Charletry Stadium, to the Law's lunch at La Coupole, and finishing with the final night for all the teams - it was brilliantly organised and great fun from start to finish.

On the field, the Law opened with a match against a good Irish side - some sloppy errors (perhaps excusable for being the first game of the season) allowed the Irish to win 12-0, despite the Law pack looking dominant - especially at scrum time. A second game against the hosts, the French, saw the side learn its lessons and put in an impressive performance to win 27 - 21.

On the second day, played in the magnificent Stade Charletry, the Law took on a Scots side with a few Irish players filling the gaps. It was always going to be a tough match - Law forwards against Scots (and Irish!) backs - and despite early opportunities to put points on the board some missed penalties saw the Law turn around only 3-0 up. After that the Law team started to tire and allow the Scots room to run - two tries allowing the eventual winners (beating Italy in the final) to get past us.

Disappoinment not to take the title of world champs home didn't dampen team spirits that night though and the team were a credit to their country, enjoying the French hospitality, mixing with the other teams and living their lives well!

A huge thank you to the French Law for organising the tournament and to Jack Newall, who organised the Law team.
